St Ann’s Church of Ireland sits at the junction of Dawson Street and Ann Street South, just a stone’s throw from Dublin’s famous Grafton Street. The Mansion House (the Lord Mayor’s residence) is just a few doors up from St Ann’s, and Leinster House – the home of the House of the Oireachtas – is just 300 metres away along Molesworth Street.
St Ann’s Parish was established by an Act of Parliament in 1707 on a defined area of land located between Grafton Street and Merrion Street. The church building didn’t come straight away, but much of it was complete by January 1721. The imposing west end facade that faces onto Dawson Street was rebuilt in 1868.
Today we sit right in the middle of Dublin’s retail, and much of our parish is occupied by retail, hospitality, business and government buildings. As such we’re often referred to as the church in the heart of the city with the city at its heart.
