Process of appointment
For any members of the congregation who are curious about process to appoint a new rector, the Church of Ireland has a document that outlines the process.
Here’s a link to the document: Clergy-Vacancies-11-01-17.pdf
The people involved from the parish in the candidate selection are called Parochial Nominators. This is a role that comes up for re-election every 3 years as part of the Easter Vestry meeting. Those people who were in-role at the time that the vacancy arose will be those meeting with the diocese and the Archbishop to assess the candidates and recommend an appointment.
As noted in the document, the Parochial Nominators – and indeed anyone else associated with the appointment process – are required to conduct their business in secret, and cannot discuss what’s going on with the wider congregation. This is to protect potential unsuccessful applicants who need to maintain a relationship with their existing parish.
